Key Highlights of the Sam First Experience
For those considering a visit to this premier Los Angeles jazz destination, several core elements define the Sam First Jazz Club Bar experience:
A Commitment to Authentic Live Performance: The club prioritizes the integrity of the music above all else. Performances are rarely replicated; they are spontaneous creations born of the moment, the musicians, and the energy of the room. This dedication ensures that no two nights are ever exactly the same, offering true value to repeat visitors seeking genuine improvisation.
Intimate and Acoustically Considered Setting: The physical space is designed with the musician and the audience in mind. The layout fosters a close connection between the performers and the patrons, allowing the subtle nuances of the instruments—the breath in the saxophone, the pluck of the upright bass—to be heard clearly. This acoustic focus elevates the listening experience significantly beyond that of larger, more cavernous venues.
Curated Musical Programming: The management team takes pride in booking a diverse yet cohesive lineup. Patrons can expect a rich tapestry of styles, ranging from traditional hard bop and blues-infused explorations to contemporary compositions that push the boundaries of modern jazz. This thoughtful curation appeals to a broad spectrum of musical tastes within the jazz community.
Sophisticated Yet Relaxed Atmosphere: While the music demands respect, the atmosphere remains inviting. It is a place where one can dress up for a special occasion or simply unwind after a long day. The bar service complements the music, offering carefully selected beverages designed to be savored slowly while enjoying the performance.
More Than Just Music: A Cultural Anchor
Sam First Jazz Club Bar, situated conveniently near major thoroughfares in the 90045 zip code area, serves a crucial role in the cultural fabric of Los Angeles. It acts as an anchor, grounding the city’s vibrant artistic community with a reliable source of high-caliber, live musical expression. In an era dominated by digital consumption, the club champions the irreplaceable value of shared, real-time artistic creation. It provides a necessary space for musicians to connect with their audience directly, fostering mentorship and artistic dialogue that is essential for the genre’s continued evolution.
The club’s location makes it an accessible destination for residents across the greater Los Angeles area looking for an evening defined by elegance and deep musical engagement. It is a place where conversations are often hushed during solos, where the clinking of glasses provides a subtle counterpoint to the rhythm section, and where the collective focus on the stage creates a palpable energy.

Its a little hard to find at first. If its dark outside, look for the yellow neon circle out front. The decor is a little different but surprisingly fits the feel of the whole place. Its laid back, relaxing, and the service is great. A newly updated menu leaves more to be discovered.

What a fantastic spot! I love the decor—it’s got such a unique charm. The drinks are excellent, and the music creates an incredible atmosphere. You’d never guess you’re right next to the airport; this place feels like stepping into another era. They open at 6 PM, so if you have a layover at LAX, it’s the perfect spot for a quick drink and some great jazz. Only 10 min walking from terminal 1.

Jazz club/bar by LAX with live music. Came here on a Tuesday around 9pm and they were already playing music, but the bouncer let us in and we paid a $15 cover charge per person (we didn't have tickets beforehand). There's a small parking lot that's shared with other businesses. Credit cards accepted. It's super close to the airport but the crowd seemed to be quite local (and eclectic). They do have food, but we just got some gin and tonics to enjoy the show and hung out afterwards.

Love the cozy, laid back vibe here. Came for the live music, and enjoyed it that much more thanks to the comfortable set-up as well as the bartender's service. Clean and maintained well, too. Definitely would recommend for an evening out.

I think this is mostly a place for serious music listeners who probably have a fairly good idea of what they are going to listen to. The prices are totally reasonable and affordable to also for me, occasionally take a chance on hearing someone I don’t know but have a good feeling about.
This club is the best thing to happen to LA.
Very grateful for all they are doing for live music in LA.

Great food and service, and regularly hosts strong talent. The venue is very small, and I'd imagine finding seating is a challenge for more popular performances, but we had a comfy spot off to the side for my visit.
Parking is a bit of an issue, but that's the norm for anything LA at this point.
Definitely give this venue a shot if you're interested the area and love jazz!

Great small room to see live jazz - civilized, relaxing space right at LAX. A good option if you have a layover or long delay. If it's live, get there a bit early to get the best seats, though even in the back it sounds great and there's enough view. Parking is easy. Good options for N/A drinks. More

Probably not on your radar and you’ll be surprised of how cozy a Jazz Bar next to LAX airport can be. Great music, furniture, environment and drinks. They have some free parking spots too, check those before paying for the parking in the back.
EDIT (3 years later): parking instructions for Joe’s Parking (straight behind Sam First), swipe your credit card at the entrance, enjoy the show, bring your Sam First’s receipt to the parking valet desk, they’ll give you the discount!

A serious Jazz club to enjoy world class musicians. Do you like jazz? Check. Do you like intimate musical performances? Check. Do you like crafty old school cocktails? Check. Are you looking for a bar where you can talk and get chatty with your date - WHOOPS you are looking for something else. This is a JAZZ club for musical performances and every other cool thing about it is secondary to the music.

Sam First is second to none! What a great venue. I honestly thought it was going to be a weird venue given its proximity to LAX but I was happily surprised at this chic and great-sounding jazz venue.
